Poo Problems

Poo Problems

Only when you have a small person beside you does it become acceptable, (expected?), to talk about poo and it’s many guises…so here is our current situation.

For a while now Little Bear has been very aware of when he is going and when he has been.  He will either tell us or we would notice him playing with toys whilst squatting, fearful of the consequences of sitting in his own horrendous nappy.

In the last few days though he has upped his game. He tells us when he needs a poo, then does his deed, and then wants it tipped down the toilet for him to flush away…delightful! But he’s making the connection and showing an interest so we’re just going with it.

The problem is that, as soon as he has been, he wants a clean nappy…ok, don’t blame him. But if he hasn’t finished, he then goes again…straight away!! And then wants to sit on the toilet or potty.  It’s just a very long winded process at the moment, and obviously he chooses to do this at the busiest time of day…early morning, so coinciding with washing up, laundry, showering, dressing, etc!  The issue is that he knows what the potty/toilet us for but won’t use it, but at the same time is increasingly uncomfortable about using his nappy…you’ve got to go somewhere Little Bear!

Free Beauty Treatments

Free Beauty Treatments

This morning Little Bear thought he would try is hand at being a beautician.  His approach to lip fillers was somewhat original but I can’t say it didn’t work…

Step 1:  Stand at the opposite side of the room to your client/mummy

Step 2:  Do not give any warning and be sure they look distracted

Step 3:  Charge across the room so fast that Usain Bolt would struggle to keep up

Step 4:  Crash into distracted client/mummy using your forehead to target the lips

Step 5:  Rub your head and look a bit sad so they aren’t annoyed you hurt them

I can honestly say it was one of the most painful experiences.  My lip instantly swelled and I’ve got a beautiful bruise on the inside.  I don’t know how he didn’t cry…I don’t know how I didn’t cry…but we held it together, had a cuddle, and carried on!

Although effective, I don’t think I’ll be giving him any recommendations!

Ridiculous Toddler Complaints

Ridiculous Toddler Complaints

Over the last few weeks the demands from Little Bear have been getting increasingly ridiculous and increasingly more toddler-like.

Firstly we have the incessant need to see motorbikes.  Ok, so we manage to see one on most journeys but that isn’t enough…”see more motorbikes!!!” Even when we see more than 10, it’s just not enough!

And then there’s the growing list of requirements at breakfast – cereal, toast, fruit, water, special milk…special milk that he doesn’t drink and toast that he very rarely finishes.

Whilst we’re talking about food, next on the list is bananas. Whatever happens, do not break the banana!!  This happened last week after gymnastics.  I was peeling the banana when the unthinkable happened and it broke in half.  Not a problem?  Big problem!  After Little Bear had tried, unsuccessfully, to stick it back together he had a minor meltdown before I convinced him it was actually better because it meant he had two.  And then daddy broke a banana in half and I winced, prepared for the whining, then stared in shock as he fell about laughing…because it’s funny when daddy does it!

Today’s main complaint was that I couldn’t clean a scab off his finger when wiping his hands after dinner.  I know, I’m an appalling excuse for a mother!!

I’m sure there will be plenty more of these complaints to face over the next few years, and whilst frustrating at the time…they’re actually pretty funny!

Nothing is a Secret Anymore

Nothing is a Secret Anymore

The other day Little Bear had been really good.  We had had a lovely morning of playing and walking to the library, he was polite and happy, he ate all his lunch, and happily had a nap.  In the afternoon we went to the park and he explored independently, drove the car through the jungle telling me what he could see (lots of crocodiles!), and pointed out all the aeroplanes taking people on holiday.

He then asked to go home because he was cold, bless him.  To be fair, so was I.  A hot chocolate and a Jaffa Cake sounded perfect so I made us a drink each and then we each had a Jaffa Cake (or 2) as well.

Little Bear knows it’s a treat to get hot chocolate at home.  He usually only gets it at nanny and grandad’s house, and Jaffa Cakes are usually his treat from Grumps…but I wanted one and he had been good so, he deserved it!

Anyway, I thought we should keep the Jaffa Cakes a secret from daddy – they don’t really fit in the “Lean in 15” plan.  Little Bear was so excited about his hot chocolate that he couldnt wait to tell daddy, and I heavily emphasised that this was ok but don’t mention the Jaffa Cakes!!!!

Guess what happened?! Daddy walked in and Little Bear shouted out, “Had hot chocolate and Jaffa Caaaaaake!!!!

Oh great, thanks for that! So now any secret treat indulgence will have to be cramed into that hour of nap time along with everything else…anyone for cake?!

Dinosaur Mad!!

Dinosaur Mad!!

Over the last few weeks Little Bear has discovered dinosaurs in a big way! He was aware if them before but now he loves them! A couple of weeks ago we went to a farm that had a dinosaur area and I think that’s when the real love began…I mean, there was a pterodactyl flying through the trees, if that doesn’t get the boy excited then nothing will!

At home he already had a good collection of dinosaur toys that we had played with but had been tired of quickly, but no longer do they sit in their box waiting, oh no, they are out 90% of the time at the moment.  And we’ve added dinosaur books to the collection too – Harry and the whole glorious bucketful of them with their tongue-twister names!

The crowning glory of dinosaur play though is the addition of dinosaur food.

All good ideas should be thoroughly thought through

A mixture of dry rice, cous-cous, and lentils makes a delicious feast for a triceratops, and a diplodocus loves nothing more than munching dry spaghetti from the playdough bush.  Little Bear loves it! He feeds them, walks them, puts them to bed…

…and creates a hideous mess that leaves me pondering the “crowning glory”.  Yes, he loves it but cous-cous?? Really?? On carpet?? The clean up operation is not for the faint hearted.

I had dreams that we would play blissfully together, creating stories, and competing to make the loudest dinosaur noises…the reality isn’t far from that, except my dinosaur roar, in the face of the food being tipped over again, is more like the wail of innocent prey being captured by a tyrannosaurus rex!

Toddler Troubles…

Toddler Troubles…

Coming home from a lovely morning with friends I asked Little Bear what he would like for lunch.  I only expect a few answers, usually cheese, followed by beans, and every so often eggs makes an appearance.  Today it was cheese.  So I said, ok let’s go home and make cheese sandwiches, “and ham?”…of course we can have a cheese and ham sandwich, “ham and cheese bagel?”…well that’s a bit tricky as we don’t have any bagels, but we can have a sandwich.  This was not the answer he wanted, why could I not provide the doughy deliciousness of a bagel?!  So I find myself explaining that we can’t always have what we want and sometimes it just depends what we have in the fridge.  It’s safe to say this isn’t the conversation I ever imagined having with my 22 month old…#toddlerproblems

Lunch made I decided to ease the trauma with a few Pom Bears…a firm favourite that will ease the pain of most situations.  Today we have bitten various parts of our bears off to make rabbits and butterflies, and even a boat somehow – that one required a lot of inagination!

And now it’s naptime and I’m off to sweep the neverending stream of mud that Little Bear creates!

Sleep Adjustment and Exploring Tents

Sleep Adjustment and Exploring Tents

Just over a week ago we made the decision to limit Little Bear to an hour sleep at nap time.  He had started stretching to nearly 2 hours and the result was an even earlier wake up call in the morning.

The first few days he was waking up groggy but after that he began stirring at around the hour mark, so his body was obviously starting to adjust.  And almost instantly he began waking up later in the mornings…at least until another cold hit and a coughing fit woke him up at 5.30 this morning.

By the end of last week he was starting to get a bit grouchy mid afternoon, like the reduced nap on so many consecutive days was finally hitting him.  It was horrible to see him feeling sleep deprived but it’s helping in the long run, he slept til nearly 7am yesterday and is falling asleep quicker at night.

I am also having to adjust to the reduced sleep time during the day.  I have to be aware of the time he falls asleep and then constantly clock watch for the next hour! When we’re at home I now feel like I have to rush to get jobs done because I know my time is limited, and in this great rush I end up doing nothing because I spend half the time prioristising in my head!!

But we’re getting there! And an hour of peace is better than nothing!!

Yesterday, he wanted home to be dark, at about 4 o’clock…just a bit early! Daddy suggested making tents instead and that pleased Little Bear so much that I thought he would burst with excitement.  After rearranging the furniture and bringing a selection of blankets into the lounge, Little Bear set about making it comfy with all the essentials – cushions, torch, water, and cars (the essentials).  He played in and out of it so happily until dinner, it was lovely to watch.  My only problem is that I am probably going to be asked to recreate the tent, and without supervision, it may go horribly wrong!

After dinner we continued with the tent theme and daddy hid under the bed throw.  Little Bear joined him and then so did I.  Where daddy was holding the throw up you could see tiny pinpricks of light, Little Bear reached up and touched the stars…then asked, “Where’s the moon?”, so I came out and shone the torch through.

Little Bear reached up again, and I heard him whisper, “Daddy, I touched the moon.” ♡♡
